Job Description Position Information TitleAssistant/Associate Extension Agent, Agriculture (Yuma County, Arizona) DepartmentYuma County Office (1544) Medical Sub-Speciality LocationCounty Extensions and Farms Position Summary This continuing-eligible position, located in Yuma, Arizona, will develop and deliver science-based Extension programs targeting the production of agricultural and horticultural crops in the desert southwest. The successful candidate will assist growers with all aspects of crop management including crop/variety selection; crop establishment; irrigation, pest and nutrient management; harvest management; food safety and marketing. This position will be responsible for assessing stakeholder needs and then develop, implement and evaluate effective outcome-based Extension programs that address identified issues. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required as this position will work collaboratively with Extension and research colleagues, government agencies, commodity organizations and stakeholders to facilitate program delivery through workshops, seminars, clinics, field days, publications and traditional and social media. The successful candidate must be able to communicate science-based information to colleagues and stakeholders, and develop the necessary resources from grants, contracts, gifts and volunteer programs to build and sustain programs. This position will be located at the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension office in Yuma, Arizona. Yuma County encompasses approximately 5,500 square miles and has a year-round population of about 200,000. Agriculture is the top economic driver in Yuma County contributing about 2.5 billion dollars to the local economy. Total cash receipts for crops grown in Yuma County total nearly 1 billion dollars annually. There are approximately 180,000 acres in agricultural production in the county. Primary corps include produce, grain, hay, and cotton. Leafy green vegetables are of primary importance and Yuma County has become known as the 'Lettuce Capital of the World'. Approximately 90% of the lettuce sold in the United States from November to March is grown in the Yuma area. Yuma County is also one of the world's top producers of Medjool Dates and a top exporter of Durum Wheat. Yuma County produces over 175 different crops and seeds. Agriculture in Yuma County is diverse and grand. Duties & Responsibilities A.Program Development - 1.Conducts a systematic analysis of national, Arizona, and county data, local resources, and historical information in order to identify community assets, program needs, and outreach opportunities. 2.Identifies resources (grants, contracts, gifts, in kind contributions, etc.) to enhance programs. **** cooperation with community groups, local leaders, Extension advisory groups, and other Extension professionals, develops an annual Plan of Work. 4.Consults with Extension faculty, Experiment Station researchers, and other experts in the development of educational programs, applied research, and scholarly works. B.Program Implementation - 1.Conducts creative programming and utilizes new technology that may include problem solving research, to address priority needs of the target audiences. 2.Participates in statewide working groups to develop new and creative programming efforts. 3.Prepares educational material, evaluation instruments, teaching materials and publicity information in support of state, county, and community initiatives. 4.Functions as a resource for other agencies and organizations. Promotes interaction and cooperation among various groups. 5.Disseminates educational materials through county wide and/or multi-county events, workshops, websites, newsletters and other mass media methods, use of volunteers, and other methods. 6.Provides for recruitment, training and recognition of volunteers and assists them in the conduct of educational programs as appropriate. 7.Promotes communication and teamwork with county and state Extension, other faculty and youth professionals. 8.Promotes Cooperative Extension as the outreach arm of the state land-grant university. C.Program Results - 1.Evaluates and documents results and impacts of educational programs. 2.Communicates program results to both professional peers and clientele through periodic reports, scholarly works, and various types of publications (e.g., bulletins/fact sheets, popular articles, state publications, scientific articles, social media, and video and computer programs. 3.Consults with the County Extension Director to evaluate program effectiveness and personal achievements as an Extension member. D.Professionalism - 1.Maintains professional competence through study, participation in professional activities and the application of knowledge and skills on the job. 2.Maintains high ethical and professional standards. 3.Promotes public understanding and support for Extension and University programs. 4.All faculty and staff are expected to fully adhere to the collegiality policies adopted by the University (November 2018) and work productively and in a collegial manner with all faculty, students, staff, and university constituents. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities *Excellent administrative and program management skills *Knowledge of pertinent guidelines and policies *Maintains professional competence through study, participation in professional activities and the application of knowledge and skills on the job. *Maintains high ethical and professional standards. *Promotes public understanding and support for Extension and University programs. Minimum Qualifications 1.Master of Science degree in agricultural-related field. 2.Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 3.Excellent interpersonal skills with capacity and willingness to engage diverse constituents in educational programs. 4.Able to build partnerships and work effectively with industry and community stakeholders and be responsive to their needs. 5.Knowledge and/or experience in desert southwest farming practices. 6.Able to work occasional evenings and weekends. **** time of employment must possess, or be able to acquire, a valid Arizona driver's license, able to travel year-round providing reliable transportation when necessary (mileage reimbursed), able to travel statewide, nationwide using a variety of modes of transportation, and ability to drive according to the University . Preferred Qualifications 1.Experience or training in applied or problem-solving research that may be applied to desert southwest agricultural practices. 2.Experience in field experimental design, methodology, and statistical analysis. 3.Demonstrated ability to conduct Extension/outreach programs that address issues and problems related to desert southwest agriculture. 4.Demonstrated record of publications or other scholarly activities. 5.Demonstrated success in obtaining grants, contracts, and gift funds. 6.Demonstrated ability to use current computer technology and distance-bridging technologies to expand learning opportunities. 7.Fluent in Spanish.
